Damayanti Debnath

A multidisciplinary artist presents a compelling synthesis of heritage and ecological inquiry, through her fictional landscapes. With multiple layers of painted fabric and intricate stitching, she transforms the canvas into a "cerebral space" reflecting our collective guilt over ecological decay. Works such as The Uprooted Mountains and Hollow Bones serve as visceral manifestations of a world stripped of its vitality, challenging the commoditization of nature. By treating "space" as a living entity, she creates a haunting duality of serenity and suffocation. Her formal training began with a degree in painting from the University of Burdwan (2016), followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the Central University of Hyderabad (2018). Over the past seven years, her practice has expanded beyond the studio to encompass land art, installation, and collaborative performance, alongside experiments with video, sound, and text. She has shared her work in exhibitions across major Indian cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmadabad and Hyderabad.
