Dhruva Mistry was born in Kanjaia, Gujarat, in 1957. M. A. (Sculpture) from the Faculty of Fine Arts, The MSU of Baroda, from 1974 to 1981. Studied at the Royal College of Art, London on a British Council Scholarship 1981 to 1983 and worked as a freelance artist till 1997. His first solo exhibition was held at Art Heritage, New Delhi and the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, 1981-82. He was Artist in Residence at Kettle’s Yard, with a Fellowship at Churchill College, Cambridge (1984–85) and since then he has shown regularly in India and abroad. Represented Britain at the Third Rodin Grand Prize Exhibition, Japan in 1990 and was selected for the solo show 'Asian Artists Today — Fukuoka Annual VII', by the Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan (1994). His works are included in group shows in India and abroad since 1976 and he has held over 25 solo exhibitions. Dhruva Mistry was elected Royal Academician in 1991 and Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1993 and was awarded an Honorary CBE in 2001. He returned to India in 1997 and was, until 2002, appointed Professor, Head of Sculpture and Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at The M. S. University of Baroda.
