In the Vishnudharmottara Purana, wall painting and floor painting are two of the 64 arts considered essential for cultured Indian women. Even today in India, women are seen following this tradition to a greater or lesser extent. However, both of the above forms are perhaps seen more prominently in Rajasthan than in other regions. 'Floor painting' (Bhumi Chitra) can mean Rangoli, Rangavali, Chauk, Alpana, or Kolam. In Rajasthan, the name Mandana is used for Rangoli, and Moradiya is used for wall paintings created by women.
